When Dortmund drew with Mainz in their final game, they wasted their chance to win the Bundesliga and gave Bayern another championship.
With the championship already in their possession, Dortmund knew that they only needed to outperform Bayern in the decisive week. But in the 15th minute, Dortmund let up a goal of their own to Andreas Hanche-Olsen as word of a Kingsley Coman goal spread over Signal Iduna Park.
But following a foul in the area, which was quickly determined to be a penalty, Dortmund had an opportunity of their own. Dortmund was behind 1-0 after Sebastian Haller's attempt from the penalty spot was saved.
When Karim Onisiwo increased the score to 2-0 in the 24th minute, the situation worsened and panic spread across the crowd.
As word of Bayern's goal spread, Dortmund's hopes were raised by Raphael Guerriero's goal, which drew the score to 2-1. However, a Jamal Musiala goal in Koln put an end to Dortmund's dreams.
With their back five essentially managing everything the opposition threw at them, Mainz held steady even as Dortmund pushed forward fiercely to maintain their championship aspirations.
Gio Reyna, a member of the United States men's national team, stood out for Dortmund as his introduction in the second half altered the course of the match. With his contribution to Guerreiro's goal, he almost instantly gave Dortmund a boost in energy and inventiveness.
