Ghanaian Striker Raphael Dwamena passes away after collapsing during Albanian League match

Posted : 12 November 2023
Raphael Dwamena, whose football journey began as a young talent at Red Bull Salzburg, had a career spanning clubs like FC Zurich, Levante, and Real Zaragoza. However, tragedy struck as the 28-year-old Ghanaian striker collapsed on the field during a match in Albania and subsequently passed away despite the immediate efforts of specialist doctors.

Playing for Egnatia against Partizani, Dwamena's sudden collapse led to the abandonment of the match. His unexpected demise, as confirmed by the Albanian Football Federation (AFL), deeply impacted the Albanian football community, prompting the postponement of all scheduled games in the country as a mark of respect.

Dwamena's impact was felt not only on the field but also in the stats, leading as the top scorer in the Albanian league with nine goals in the current season. His contributions extended to international play, earning nine caps and netting two goals for his country. The Ghana Football Association conveyed heartfelt condolences, acknowledging Dwamena's dedication and grace while representing Ghana.

Throughout his career, Dwamena faced highs and lows, from a failed £14m move to Brighton due to a medical issue in 2017 to instances of health challenges, including a collapse during a cup match in Austria in 2021. Reports indicated he underwent a heart operation and had an automatic defibrillator implanted. Clubs like Levante and Real Zaragoza paid tribute, honoring Dwamena's legacy and expressing deep sorrow at the passing of their former player.
