Germany's World Cup standout David Odogu, eligible for Nigeria

Posted : 29 November 2023

The Germany U-17 team secured a spot in the FIFA U-17 World Cup final, triumphing over Argentina in a penalty shootout after a thrilling match that saw Agustin Ruberto score a hat-trick for Argentina, countered by Paris Brunner and Max Moerstedt for Germany. The team, anchored by 17-year-old defender David Odogu, has showcased a robust defensive performance throughout the tournament, conceding only four goals before the semifinal.

Born on June 3, 2006, in Germany to a Nigerian father, Odogu has consistently impressed with his defensive skills, contributing 1.7 interceptions, 3 tackles, 3.3 ball recoveries, 4.3 clearances, and 47 touches per game, according to Sofascore. Having progressed through the German football ranks, Odogu has already celebrated success by winning the U-17 Euros with Germany.

Standing at 6'2, Odogu, a traditional central defender capable of playing on either side, possesses the attributes of height, speed, and skill on the ball. With 11 appearances for the German U-17s, he is recognized as one of the rising talents in German football.

While Odogu remains eligible to play for the Super Eagles, as per FIFA rules, given his absence from the German senior team, the influx of abroad-trained footballers into the Nigerian squad raises the possibility of him joining stars like Leon Balogun, Troost Ekong, and others. However, if Odogu continues to excel, similar to Jamal Musiala, the prospect of him choosing Nigeria may diminish.
