Germany appoints Julian Nagelsmann as new national team manager

Posted : 22 September 2023
The German Football Federation (DFB) has officially announced Julian Nagelsmann as the new manager of the German national football team. Nagelsmann, the former coach of Bayern Munich, has been appointed to replace Hansi Flick, who was sacked following Germany's 4-1 defeat to Japan on September 9, 2023. The Euro 2024 hosts face the challenge of regaining their top form ahead of next summer's tournament.

Nagelsmann's contract with the DFB is set to run until July 31, 2024, coinciding with the conclusion of Euro 2024. He will be supported by assistant coaches Sandro Wagner and Benjamin Glueck.

Speaking at a press conference, Nagelsmann expressed his commitment to the upcoming Euros, describing it as a significant challenge. He emphasized the responsibility they have to represent the nation and excite fans with attractive and effective football.

Nagelsmann also highlighted the importance of playing football with a clear tactical approach and delivering entertaining performances, not solely focused on results. With the Euros being hosted in Germany and the nation's support behind them, he outlined their ambitious goals.

The new manager pledged that Germany's fans would witness his team's playing style in the upcoming international matches when they travel to the United States to face the United States and Mexico next month.

Nagelsmann's appointment comes after his departure from Bayern Munich in March, where he was replaced by Thomas Tuchel. Despite having a contract with Bayern until June 2026, Nagelsmann's decision to take over from Flick led him to terminate his remaining contract with the Bundesliga champions, foregoing a substantial severance payment.

Hansi Flick, who had taken charge of Germany in August 2021, had a challenging tenure, marked by 12 wins in 25 matches. His dismissal made history as the first time a manager was sacked by the German national team.

Following Flick's departure, Rudi Voller temporarily assumed the role of interim manager for Germany's friendly against France on September 12, a match they won 2-1 thanks to goals from Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané.

With Julian Nagelsmann now leading the team, his immediate focus will be preparing the national squad for the Euros hosted in Germany. The DFB President, Bernd Neuendorf, expressed confidence in Nagelsmann's ability to create enthusiasm among fans and achieve success in the tournament.

Nagelsmann has previously managed clubs including Hoffenheim, RB Leipzig, and Bayern Munich, establishing himself as one of the most promising young managers in international football. He secured the Bundesliga title with Bayern in 2022.
