German-born RB Agu extends with Werder, eyes Nigeria call-up

Posted : 16 July 2024

German Bundesliga side Werder Bremen announced on their official website that Felix Agu has secured his long-term future with the club by signing a new contract. This news brings excitement not only to the club and player but also to Nigerian football fans.

Agu, a right-back born in Osnabrück, Germany, joined Werder Bremen in the summer of 2020 from VfL Osnabrück. Impressing with his performances, he has earned a contract extension a year before his previous deal was set to expire. While the exact details of the contract length and financials remain undisclosed, various reports suggest it extends his stay with the club until 2027.

Agu has become a dependable figure for Werder Bremen since his arrival. He has racked up a total of 72 appearances, contributing offensively with 2 goals and 7 assists. However, his story extends beyond club football, with an intriguing international twist.

Despite being born in Germany, Agu is eligible to represent the Nigerian national team, nicknamed the Super Eagles. This opportunity arises because he only played in two friendly matches for the German U21 team.  International football regulations allow a one-time switch of allegiance if a player has featured in a limited number of non-competitive matches for their first national team. Agu, having not reached that threshold, remains open to representing Nigeria.

In December 2021, Agu publicly expressed his openness to play for the Super Eagles, igniting excitement amongst Nigerian football fans. This potential international call-up adds another layer to his recent contract extension, signifying a period of personal and professional growth for the young defender.

Commenting on his new deal, Agu expressed his contentment with the club and his ambitions for the future. "I've been here for four years now," he said. "Since relegation, I believe we've developed tremendously as a team, and individual players have flourished at Werder Bremen. I feel a strong sense of belonging here – with the team, the club, and the city.  These are perfect conditions for me to take the next step in my career."

The upcoming season promises to be a defining one for Agu. He will be sporting the number 27 jersey for Werder Bremen, showcasing his talent on the Bundesliga stage.  However, fans will also be keeping a close eye on the possibility of him donning the green and white jersey of the Nigerian national team.  Felix Agu's journey is far from over, and both club and country will be eagerly watching his development in the years to come.
