Georgia Exits Euro 2024 with Heads Held High Despite 4-1 Loss to Spain

Posted : 30 June 2024

Despite Georgia’s 4-1 loss to Spain in the last-16 of Euro 2024, fans in homes, restaurants, and a packed Tbilisi stadium were still brimming with pride over their team’s remarkable achievements in the tournament.

"It's sad we lost, but we played with dignity. And we never expected to get this far," remarked Iakob Beridze, a 35-year-old civil servant adorned with a Georgia flag, watching the game with his family among 25,000 others at the Mikheil Meskhi stadium.

As the lowest-ranked team in the Euros, representing a nation of 3.7 million people, Georgia stunned the football world by advancing to the knockout phase in their first major finals, including a stunning upset victory over Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal. The fairy tale seemed poised to continue when Georgia took an early lead against Spain, who had yet to concede a goal in the tournament, triggering fireworks in the capital.

Despite Spain's comeback to secure the win, Georgia received a heartfelt ovation from tens of thousands of fans in Germany and widespread admiration at home. "Thanks to the boys for the joy they brought to Georgian fans," said Kakha Kaladze, mayor of Tbilisi and former AC Milan player. The streets of Tbilisi, where football fever momentarily overshadowed political protests, echoed with chants of "Long Live Georgia!" as cars adorned with national flags paraded and honked their horns late into the night.
