Former England manager Gareth Southgate revealed on Wednesday that he is in no hurry to return to management and might even explore career opportunities outside of football. Southgate, who stepped down in July after England's Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain, indicated he needs time to recharge before making any decisions about his next move. Despite speculation linking him to Manchester United, he dismissed the idea of taking on a new role anytime soon.
The 54-year-old emphasized that he wants to enjoy life and make thoughtful decisions regarding his future, stating that he's open to possibilities both within and beyond the football world. While Southgate steps away, interim manager Lee Carsley has impressed with victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland in the Nations League, positioning himself as a contender for the permanent role.
Reflecting on his decision to resign, Southgate expressed satisfaction with the positive impact a fresh coaching staff and new players have brought to the England team. He believes stepping aside was the right move and feels content with the contributions he made during his eight-year tenure.
Under Southgate’s leadership, England reached the final of Euro 2020, the semifinals of the 2018 World Cup, and the quarterfinals of the 2022 World Cup. Despite falling short of winning a major tournament, Southgate takes pride in having restored England's status at the top level of international football. He expressed gratitude for the experience and remains optimistic about the team’s future success.
