Turkish football club Galatasaray has shared an important update on the fitness of Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, creating concerns for Nigeria's Super Eagles ahead of their AFCON qualifiers against Libya.
The 25-year-old forward picked up an injury during Galatasaray’s Super Lig match against Kasımpaşa on September 28, after scoring two goals in the first half—his first for the club. Unfortunately, Osimhen was forced to leave the pitch at halftime due to discomfort.
Osimhen, sensing the issue, requested a substitution, and Dries Mertens, a former Napoli teammate, replaced him for the second half. Despite Galatasaray’s strong 3-0 lead before Osimhen’s exit, the team faltered and ended up drawing the match 3-3.
Following the game, Osimhen tried to calm fans, mentioning that he felt "fine" and was only experiencing minor discomfort in his leg. However, the club later revealed more concerning news.
On Tuesday, Galatasaray issued a statement detailing the injury, explaining that Osimhen experienced pain in his left posterior muscle during the match, and the medical team had begun treatment.
Medical examinations showed that Osimhen suffered a strain along with minor bleeding in his muscle, ruling him out of upcoming matches, including Galatasaray’s UEFA Europa League game against Rigas FC and a Super Lig fixture against Alanyaspor.
His participation in Nigeria’s upcoming AFCON qualifiers remains uncertain, which could be a significant setback for the Super Eagles as they prepare to face Libya in two key matches in October.
