Galatasaray coach Orkan Buruk has explained why he substituted Victor Osimhen in the 80th minute during their Europa League match against AZ Alkmaar. According to Buruk, the decision was made to protect the Nigerian striker from potential injury.
Osimhen had earlier found the net for Galatasaray in their crucial second-leg fixture at Rams Park. However, despite his efforts, the team still faced an uphill battle, having suffered a three-goal deficit in the first leg. With the match tied at 2-2, Buruk opted to replace Osimhen with young forward Berat Lus.
The decision raised eyebrows, as it seemed to signal that Galatasaray had conceded defeat. However, Buruk later clarified his reasoning. He pointed out that with Alvaro Morata already sidelined, he needed to preserve Osimhen’s fitness for future games.
Buruk stated that if Galatasaray had scored the first goal of the match, Osimhen might have remained on the field longer. He acknowledged that the game did not go as planned but emphasized the need to manage the squad wisely.
Osimhen had an active performance, attempting seven shots, with one resulting in a goal. His movement and work rate were impressive, but he missed some good opportunities that could have improved his tally.
Despite scoring 20 goals in 25 games for Galatasaray, Osimhen still has room for improvement. His efficiency in front of goal could be better, as he tends to take many shots per game.
With their Europa League campaign now over, Galatasaray will shift focus to domestic competitions. Their priority will be defending the Turkish Super Lig title and competing in the Turkish Cup.
