Galatasaray Accuses Mourinho of Racism After Heated Istanbul Derby

Posted : 25 February 2025

Galatasaray has accused Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho of making racist remarks following their heated 0-0 draw in the Istanbul derby. While the club did not specify which comments they were referring to, reports suggest Mourinho described Galatasaray’s bench as "jumping like monkeys."

The Portuguese coach, who has previously managed Real Madrid, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Tottenham, has yet to publicly respond to the allegations. He also reportedly repeated his criticism of Turkish referees, although Monday’s match was officiated by Slovenia's Slavko Vincic after both clubs requested a foreign referee.

In a strongly worded statement, Galatasaray announced plans to take legal action against the 62-year-old coach, accusing him of consistently making derogatory comments about Turkish people since arriving in the country.

The club described his latest remarks as "inhumane rhetoric" and confirmed its intention to file complaints with UEFA and FIFA. Galatasaray also challenged Fenerbahce, which prides itself on "exemplary moral values," to take a stand against Mourinho’s alleged conduct.

Fenerbahce has not yet issued a response to the accusations, but the controversy adds further tension to the title race in Turkey’s Super Lig. Galatasaray currently leads the table, sitting six points ahead of their fierce rivals. The fallout from this incident could have wider implications, both for Mourinho’s tenure at Fenerbahce and for the rivalry between the two clubs.
