Gabriel's Header Secures Arsenal's Narrow Victory Over Tottenham

Posted : 15 September 2024

It was somewhat predictable that a tightly contested north London derby would be decided by a set piece, especially given Tottenham Hotspur’s recurring vulnerability in this area under Ange Postecoglou. In the 64th minute, Bukayo Saka's corner kick found Arsenal defender Gabriel unmarked, and his powerful header secured a 1-0 win for Mikel Arteta's team. This marked Arsenal's third set-piece goal against Tottenham in their last four Premier League encounters.

Tottenham's ongoing struggles with defending set pieces have been evident throughout the season. Since the start of the previous campaign, they have conceded 18 goals from set pieces, a statistic surpassed only by Nottingham Forest. Postecoglou, who has frequently defended his approach to set-piece training, expressed frustration after the game. Despite regular practice and awareness of Arsenal’s threat, Tottenham's lapse allowed Gabriel to score, contributing to their continued struggles.

Before the match, Postecoglou had pointed out that Tottenham’s four points from three games could easily have been nine, citing strong performances against Leicester City, Everton, and Newcastle United. Although Tottenham started well against Arsenal, they quickly ran out of ideas and struggled to breach Arsenal’s defense. Key players Son Heung-min and new signing Dominic Solanke were unable to make an impact, and the midfield lacked the creativity needed to break through.

Tottenham, who had an impressive start to last season under Postecoglou, are now struggling with consistency. Their performance has been more consistent compared to the previous year's first four games, yet the results have not been favorable. With a tough match against Brentford on the horizon, Postecoglou remains focused on improving the team's fortunes and addressing the issues that have hindered their performance so far.
