Gabriel Jesus Faces Long Absence Due to Suspected ACL Injury

Posted : 14 January 2025

Arsenal's Brazilian forward, Gabriel Jesus, is facing a potential extended absence after sustaining an injury during Sunday's FA Cup match against Manchester United, which is suspected to be an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear.

Jesus had to be stretchered off the pitch before halftime in the 3-1 loss to United, and manager Mikel Arteta has expressed concern over the severity of the injury. Arteta confirmed that further assessments are needed and will have more clarity later in the day following consultations with another specialist.

The injury comes at a particularly challenging time for Jesus, who had recently regained his form, scoring his first Premier League goals of the season in December with a brace against Crystal Palace, followed by another in a win over Brentford.

Additionally, Jesus scored a hat-trick in the League Cup quarterfinal against Palace. Since joining Arsenal from Manchester City in 2022, Jesus has been a key contributor, having won multiple league titles with his former club.

In light of Jesus' potential long-term absence, Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal may need to explore the transfer market for reinforcements. However, he emphasized that the club is also addressing other areas of need beyond just the forward position. "We are actively looking in the market to improve the squad," Arteta stated, noting that investing in the team is crucial to their ongoing success.

Arteta also voiced strong condemnation of the online abuse directed at Kai Havertz after his penalty miss in the FA Cup shootout loss. He expressed frustration with the toxic environment surrounding online criticism and called for collective responsibility to address and eliminate such behavior from the game.

As Arsenal prepares for their upcoming north London derby against Tottenham, Arteta highlighted the importance of the atmosphere and the role fans play in motivating the team.
