Gündogan urges Barcelona to show more emotion after El Clásico defeat

Posted : 29 October 2023
Following Barcelona's 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid in the El Clásico at the Olympic Stadium, Ilkay Gündogan emphasized the need for the team to display more emotion and passion to compete effectively in major matches. While Barça initially took the lead in the first half with a goal by Gündogan, a second-half brace by Jude Bellingham, including the 92nd-minute winner, propelled Real Madrid to the top of LaLiga, leaving Barcelona level on points with Girona and four points behind their rivals.

Expressing his disappointment, Gündogan stated that the reaction in the dressing room after the loss revealed the challenges they face in their title aspirations this season. He called for more frustration, anger, and disappointment among the team, especially in the face of such avoidable defeats.

Gündogan emphasized the need for heightened emotions, particularly in response to losses and when the team knows they can perform better in critical situations. He stressed that this emotional response, or lack thereof, ultimately affects their performance on the field.

The 33-year-old Gündogan, who joined Barcelona from Manchester City in the summer after winning the Treble with the Premier League side, acknowledged his role as a more experienced player in guiding the team through difficult times. He emphasized the need for resilience and not allowing things to happen passively, declaring that they must stand strong and resist further setbacks.

Barcelona's defeat in the El Clásico marked their first loss in all competitions this season. While Gündogan's goal gave them an early lead, Bellingham's spectacular season continued with two crucial goals for Real Madrid. Despite the loss, Xavi Hernández, Barcelona's coach, believed that the result did not accurately reflect the game, emphasizing that they had the better part of the match but were ultimately undone by Madrid's efficiency in front of goal.
