Future International FC emerges champions of maiden Nasarawa North Football Tourney

Posted : 05 March 2024

The Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development in Nasarawa State, Hon. Jafaru Ango, has reiterated the commitment of Governor Abdullahi Sule's administration to transforming the Sports Academy in Akwanga Local Government Area. This transformation aligns with the state's blueprint for sports development.

The Commissioner made this statement during the final of the Nasarawa North Football Competition 2024, where Future International FC of Wamba defeated Akwanga Selected FC 5-4 on penalty shootouts after a goalless stalemate in regulation time at the Central Pilot Primary School football field in Akwanga.

According to the Commissioner, "Governor Abdullahi Sule has consistently shown dedication to the development of our youth and sports infrastructure. His significant investments, such as the refurbished Lafia City Stadium, demonstrate his commitment. Three months ago, the Governor approved the remodelling of the Sports Academy in Akwanga to meet international standards and accommodate various sporting activities."

He highlighted that the only pending requirement is sufficient land provision by the Akwanga Local Government Area administration to relocate the Academy to a more suitable location. Once achieved, it will further emphasize Governor Sule's commitment to sports development.

Jafaru commended Hon. Silas Agara, Chairman of the Nationwide League One and former Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, for initiating the grassroots football competition. He pledged the government's support to ensure the success of the newly formed Amateur Football Club and the realization of football dreams for young talents in the state.

During the event, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau, expressed delight in participating in the historic tournament, which evolved into the creation of a third-tier football club. He emphasized the importance of supporting grassroots talents and applauded the initiative.

Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau mentioned plans to collaborate with the Governor of Nasarawa State and Akwanga Local Government to build a mini football stadium in Akwanga, alleviating pressure on the Lafia City Stadium. He praised Hon. Silas Agara for his contributions to grassroots football.

Hon. Silas Agara, Chairman of the NLO and organizer of the Nasarawa North Football Competition, explained the tournament's purpose. He emphasized the need to revive football in Akwanga, stating that the competition aimed to establish a new Amateur Football Club named WAN AGARA (Wamba, Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon), with his name completing the acronym.

For the champions, Future International FC received a cash prize of Five Hundred Thousand Naira and a trophy. The runners-up, Akwanga Selected FC, received Three Hundred Thousand Naira. The President of the Nasarawa State Football Association, Salisu Galadima, also contributed financially to both teams.

The Member representing Akwanga South at the State House of Assembly, Hon. Yusuf Chumbaya, provided additional financial support to the winners and runners-up. Leopard Academy of Akwanga, the 3rd Place Play-off winner, received Two Hundred Thousand Naira.

Individual awards included Theophilus Wahe from Future International FC as the Most Valuable Player, Salim Bashir as the Golden Boot winner, Sunusi Agidi as the Best Goalkeeper, and Suleiman Sani of Sporting Boys FC as the Best Coach. Bees' FC of Nasarawa Eggon won the Fair Play award.

Special recognitions were given to various individuals, including the NFF President, Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Hon. Ibrahim Usman Angbolo, and other distinguished guests.

The high point of the event was the unveiling of the official logo of the WAN AGARA Football Club by the NFF President.
