Fulham unable to finalize deadline day deal with Nigerian winger

Posted : 04 February 2025

Fulham's efforts to bring in Nigerian winger Bright Osayi-Samuel from Fenerbahce on deadline day fell through after their initial focus on securing Samuel Chukwueze also failed. Osayi-Samuel, who is in the final five months of his contract with the Turkish club, had been a key target for the Cottagers as they looked to strengthen their squad. With his contract expiring soon, he is free to discuss pre-contract agreements with other teams.

Despite Fulham's late attempt to secure the 27-year-old's services, Fenerbahce turned down their offer, keeping Osayi-Samuel in Turkey for the remainder of the season. The Nigerian international has been a vital part of Fenerbahce’s squad this season, making 24 appearances across all competitions. He has started 18 of those matches and contributed with one assist, showcasing his importance to the team.

Although his performances have been crucial, Osayi-Samuel has yet to sign a contract extension with the Turkish club, leading to speculation about his future. This situation has kept many clubs on alert, including Fulham, who were eager to reinforce their squad as they push for European qualification.

Initially, Fulham's focus was on signing Samuel Chukwueze from AC Milan, with hopes of adding the Nigerian winger to their ranks. However, the move for Chukwueze fell apart, leaving Fulham in search of other options to strengthen their attacking options.

As the deadline approached, Fulham shifted their attention to Osayi-Samuel in hopes of bolstering their right-back position. Yet, Fenerbahce was unwilling to allow the player to leave mid-season, blocking any potential move.

Following the rejection of their deadline-day bid, reports suggest that Fulham may revisit the idea of signing Osayi-Samuel when his contract expires in the summer. This would allow the Cottagers to secure the player on a free transfer, adding him to their roster without the need for a mid-season deal.

If Fulham succeeds in reaching an agreement, the Nigerian international could make a return to England after a successful period with Queens Park Rangers (QPR). His previous stint in the Championship showed his potential, and a move back to the Premier League could provide a fresh challenge for Osayi-Samuel.
