Frattesi Poised to Lead Italy Against Spain in Crucial Euro 2024 Clash

Posted : 19 June 2024

Davide Frattesi will play a crucial role in Italy's attempt to overcome a formidable Spain at Euro 2024 on Thursday, having gained the trust of coach Luciano Spalletti despite limited starts at Inter Milan. The midfielder, who had a relatively minor role in Inter's Serie A triumph, has nonetheless made significant impacts through his dynamic performances as a substitute during his debut season under Simone Inzaghi.

Although Frattesi started only six matches for Inter last season, he managed to make a significant contribution by scoring eight goals and providing five assists across all competitions, effectively equating to 15 full matches. His ability to be in the right place at the right time has carried over to the international stage, showcasing his knack for crucial plays.

Since Spalletti took the helm of the Italian national team in August last year, Frattesi has scored four out of his five international goals under Spalletti's leadership, narrowly missing a sixth when his shot hit the post in Italy's opening 2-1 victory over Albania.

Reflecting on his inaugural season with Inter, Frattesi acknowledged the challenges of integrating into a new team, particularly one that had just reached the Champions League final. He noted that the constant travel was the most exhausting part, and emphasized that consistent playing time is essential for maintaining peak form. Despite his limited starts, he expressed a desire for more match time, believing it would have enhanced his performance and conditioning.

Frattesi will join three other Inter players in Italy's lineup on Thursday, including midfielder Nicolo Barella, left-back Federico Dimarco, and defender Alessandro Bastoni, which he believes will provide an advantage due to their established rapport. Frattesi also highlighted the natural synergy he shares with former Sassuolo teammate Gianluca Scamacca, contributing to the team's fluid dynamics.

Looking ahead to the match against Spain, Frattesi acknowledged the strength of their opponents and stressed the importance of Italian unity and resilience. He expressed confidence that Italy's collective effort and fighting spirit could secure a positive result, even against individually superior opponents like Spain.
