Frankfurt Defeats Dortmund 2-0

Posted : 18 January 2025

Eintracht Frankfurt delivered a commanding 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Friday, despite the last-minute exclusion of in-form forward Omar Marmoush, who is reportedly on the verge of joining Manchester City.

Hugo Ekitike opened the scoring early, capitalizing on a well-timed cross from Rasmus Kristensen, while Frankfurt's defense held firm against Dortmund’s persistent possession play. The victory keeps Frankfurt on track for their first top-four finish in three decades, while Dortmund's struggles deepen amid mounting pressure on coach Nuri Sahin.

Dortmund entered the match desperate to reverse their poor form, having won just once in their last six games. They came close early on, with Serhou Guirassy hitting the post from a Julian Ryerson cross, but failed to maintain their momentum.

Frankfurt, undeterred by Marmoush’s absence, took the lead through Ekitike in the 18th minute, showcasing clinical finishing that has been a hallmark of their season. As Dortmund pushed forward in search of an equalizer, Frankfurt remained composed, exploiting defensive lapses to secure the win.

Oscar Hojlund sealed the game late in the second half, intercepting a midfield error from Dortmund captain Emre Can and charging down the field to slot the ball past goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.

Dortmund’s frustrations were further evident when Nnamdi Collins appeared to foul Jamie Gittens in the penalty area, but the referee dismissed the appeals, later booking Can for dissent. The defeat leaves Dortmund languishing in mid-table, with whispers of Sahin’s potential dismissal growing louder as the team sits 11 points behind Frankfurt.

The match ended with Marmoush celebrating from the stands alongside his soon-to-be former teammates, underscoring the team's unity amid transfer uncertainty. Frankfurt’s rise contrasts sharply with Dortmund’s decline, as the visitors now risk dropping to 11th depending on weekend results.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich hosts Wolfsburg on Saturday, and second-placed Bayer Leverkusen faces Borussia Moenchengladbach, as the Bundesliga title race heats up.
