France's Euro 2024 Campaign Ends in Disappointment Despite Semifinal Reach

Posted : 10 July 2024

France, once touted as favourites for Euro 2024, saw their campaign end at the semifinal stage, leaving many to deem it a disappointing tournament. Coach Didier Deschamps met his contract goals by reaching the final four and is set to continue for two more years, but overall, the French team received little praise for their performance in Germany.

Despite a solid defensive showing throughout the tournament, France faltered when it mattered most, conceding late to Spain in a 2-1 defeat in Munich. Their highly regarded attacking lineup, including Kylian Mbappe and Antoine Griezmann, failed to live up to expectations, with Griezmann facing scrutiny over his international future amidst a lackluster showing.

Mbappe, despite battling through a broken nose early in the tournament, struggled to make a significant impact, attributing his subdued performances to the discomfort caused by wearing a protective mask. His return to mask-free play in the semifinal failed to spark his usual brilliance, reflecting France's overall struggle to convert opportunities into goals.

Reflecting on the disappointment, Mbappe acknowledged the tournament as a failure for France, expressing his disappointment at falling short of their championship ambitions. Meanwhile, Griezmann, who set a new French appearance record in major tournaments, admitted to a personal struggle to find form throughout Euro 2024, emphasizing the challenges and adaptability required of footballers.

Amidst the disappointments, France found some solace in the standout performances of goalkeeper Mike Maignan and defenders Jules Kounde and William Saliba. Despite these individual highlights, the team as a whole was outclassed by a superior Spanish side, underscoring the gap between expectations and reality for Les Bleus in this tournament.

Looking ahead, France aims to regroup and improve for the upcoming World Cup, hoping that the lessons learned from Euro 2024 will propel them to better performances in the future.
