France Pins Euro 2024 Hopes on Mbappe Amidst Form Concerns

France is set to face Spain in the Euro 2024 semifinal on Tuesday, with hopes pinned on Kylian Mbappe delivering a performance that matches his superstar reputation. This tournament has seen Mbappe struggle with form and fitness, making the upcoming match in Munich a significant moment for him. As he leads his country in his first major tournament as captain, just before embarking on a new chapter with Real Madrid, the pressure is on for Mbappe to shine.

 

At 25, having recently achieved his dream move to Real Madrid, Mbappe should be in his prime. However, despite his past accolades, including winning the World Cup as a teenager and scoring a hat-trick in the 2022 final, he has yet to replicate such success in the European Championship. His final season at Paris Saint-Germain was marred by a complicated departure, and his time at the Euros has been further hampered by a broken nose in France's opening game against Austria.

 

Physically diminished and struggling to find his usual explosive edge, Mbappe has managed to score just once at the tournament, from a penalty. His performance in the quarterfinal against Portugal was notably lackluster, culminating in his substitution midway through extra time due to exhaustion. Despite his struggles, coach Didier Deschamps has emphasized the positive aspect of having Mbappe on the field, even if not at full capacity.

 

Mbappe's form, along with that of vice-captain Antoine Griezmann, has contributed to France's modest tally of three goals in five games, two of which were own goals. Despite this, his teammates remain supportive, with Randal Kolo Muani highlighting Mbappe's resilience. As captain, Mbappe has also demonstrated leadership off the field, offering motivational talks and addressing political issues. Now, as France prepares to face Spain, the team hopes Mbappe can overcome his challenges and lead them to another final.
