France Faces Familiar Challenges as It Enters a New Era of International Football

Posted : 12 June 2024

The current French team evokes memories of the squad from the 2002 World Cup. That team entered the tournament following two significant triumphs, showcasing a golden generation featuring stars like Zinedine Zidane, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, and David Trezeguet.

However, the cohesion unraveled, shattering the vision of integration through football. Today, France faces challenging months ahead with the Olympics, persistent terrorist threats, and the typically tumultuous, hot summers often leading to suburban riots.

Despite the talent evident in the current lineup, highlighted by their run to the World Cup final in Qatar where they narrowly lost to Argentina on penalties, there are concerns about unity and motivation. The squad boasts immense depth, with players on the bench who are regular starters at clubs like Real Madrid.

Yet, this depth could also be a double-edged sword. Didier Deschamps faces the critical task of maintaining harmony within the team, ensuring players are content with their roles and playing time, to avoid discontent and internal conflict.

The French team stands as the strongest contender at home, with the Netherlands being the primary rival for second place. Historically known for their attacking prowess and total football, Ronald Koeman's Dutch side has shifted towards a more defensive approach, featuring a robust backline but lacking offensive flair, especially with the absence of the injured Frenkie de Jong.

This psychological shift means the Netherlands enters the tournament not as a favorite but as a potential underdog capable of surprising stronger teams.

Austria might contest the second spot with the Netherlands, driven by Ralph Rangnick's tactical acumen. Rangnick, who turned down Bayern Munich to continue coaching Austria, is expected to field a disciplined and cohesive team, mostly composed of Bundesliga players familiar with each other. However, Austria lacks the star quality seen in their competitors.

For Austria to advance, midfielders Marcel Sabitzer and Christoph Baumgartner must deliver standout performances. Meanwhile, Poland, with stars from top European clubs, continues to struggle with tradition and expectations, likely failing to progress past the group stage once again.
