France Aim for Last 16 Spot at Euro 2024 with Mbappe's Return Against Poland

Posted : 24 June 2024

France is on the brink of securing a spot in the last 16 of Euro 2024, but they are keen to have Kylian Mbappe back and rejuvenate their goal-scoring capabilities as they prepare to face Poland in their final group stage match on Tuesday. As one of the tournament's top contenders, France has accumulated four points from their two Group D matches but has struggled offensively, netting just one goal, which came from an own goal by Austrian defender Maximilian Woeber.

In their opening match in Duesseldorf, France clinched a narrow 1-0 victory over Austria, followed by a goalless draw against the Netherlands in Leipzig, a game in which Mbappe was absent due to a broken nose suffered in the clash with Austria. Despite this injury, Mbappe has been training with the team in Paderborn and is expected to wear a protective mask upon his return. His teammates, including midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni, are optimistic about his comeback and believe his presence will significantly enhance their attacking threat.

Mbappe's involvement is crucial, as evidenced by his contribution to France's only goal so far at the Euros. Without him, the French attack has struggled, with Marcus Thuram, Antoine Griezmann, Ousmane Dembele, Kingsley Coman, and Randal Kolo Muani all failing to find the net consistently. Despite their offensive woes, Griezmann remains confident, highlighting the strong performances of the defense and midfield, and stressing the need for improved efficiency in front of goal to convert the chances they are creating.

Defensively, France has been robust, thanks to the solid performances of center-backs Dayot Upamecano and William Saliba, and the return of N'Golo Kante in midfield. A draw against Poland will ensure France's progression to the knockout stage, while even a loss could see them through, depending on the outcome of the Austria-Netherlands match. Finishing top of the group remains a priority to avoid tougher fixtures in the later rounds. Poland, already eliminated after two defeats, will rely on veteran striker Robert Lewandowski, who hopes to start after making a substitute appearance against Austria.
