Former NPFL Golden Boot winner, Mbaoma, dumps Libyan club

Posted : 10 March 2025

Chijioke Mbaoma’s journey has taken an unexpected twist. The former Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) top scorer had high hopes after securing a lucrative move to Al Ittihad in Libya.

However, what seemed like a promising chapter quickly unraveled due to an off-field misstep that cost him his contract, according to Footballrover reports.

Now, he has returned to familiar territory, signing for Rivers United in a bid to reignite his career.

According to the media outlet Beyond Limit Sport, the 22-year-old striker unknowingly breached a crucial agreement with the agent who facilitated his move to Al Ittihad.

Unaware of the strong ties between the agent and the club president, Mbaoma signed a deal behind the agent’s back.

Once the club discovered this, they swiftly terminated his contract due to FIFA regulations.

With his North African adventure cut short, Rivers United wasted no time securing the services of the prolific forward.

Rivers United head coach Finidi George is optimistic about his impact, emphasizing that Mbaoma’s experience and goal-scoring prowess will be key to the team’s ambitions.

“These are experienced players, especially strikers. I’m happy with their contributions. Let’s keep this going and see how far we can go,” Finidi told the club’s media team.

Mbaoma’s return to the NPFL is a significant boost for the PH City side, who are aiming for silverware this season.

The former Enyimba star, who previously left Heartland for a ₦15 million contract, knows what it takes to thrive at the highest level in the Nigerian league.

His finishing ability and positional awareness could be the missing piece in Finidi’s attacking setup.
