Former Leeds manager Marcelo Bielsa gets selected Uruguay's head coach
Posted : 16 May 2023
The federation announced on Monday that Marcelo Bielsa has been appointed as the men's national team manager of Uruguay through the 2026 World Cup.
Since his exit from Premier League team Leeds United in February 2022, Bielsa, 67, had remained unemployed. Diego Alonso, who held the position before his resignation following Uruguay's World Cup group-stage loss in Qatar in 2022, is replaced by him.
After managing Chile from 2007 to 2011 and Argentina from 1998 and 2004, Bielsa will be in charge of his third South American nation, Uruguay.
When Uruguay plays friendly against Nicaragua and Cuba in June, he most likely will oversee his debut games.
He is recognised as one of the world's most important coaches despite the fact that his career has yielded few championships.
In addition to managing Athletic Club and Marseille, Bielsa started his coaching career at Newell's Old Boys.
During his four years at Leeds, he was a tremendously popular figure who led the team back to the Premier League in 2020 after a 16-year absence.
Uruguay begin their qualifying campaign for the World Cup at home to Chile in September.
