Mfon Udoh, the current all-time highest goal scorer in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), has expressed his desire to witness his longstanding 23-goal record, established in 2014, be surpassed in the ongoing season.
Recall that Udoh, during his time with Enyimba, created a name in NPFL history by clinching the NPFL Golden Boot with an unparalleled 23-goal haul, eclipsing Jude Aneke’s previous record of 20 goals.
Meanwhile, the feat still remains standing after a decade later, while Udoh believes the current crop of top scorers in the league has the potential to break the record and create another one.
The race for goal-scoring supremacy sees Remo Stars’ Sikiru Alimi leading the charge with 11 goals in 16 games, closely trailed by Bayelsa United’s Robert Mizo, tallying 10 goals.
Also, Plateau United’s Albert Hilary is in contention with seven goals, hot on the heels of the leading duo.
In an encouraging post following Alimi’s 11th goal, Udoh shared his sentiments, stating, “Records will be broken, but one thing that will never be broken is being the first to do something. I wish everyone success in the goal-scoring race.”
Reflecting on his historic feat, Udoh, now playing for Bangladesh Premier League’s Bashundhara Kings, expressed his excitement about the prospect of his decade-old record being surpassed.
He highlighted the interrupted seasons that hindered potential record-breaking performances in recent years.
The NPFL witnessed close attempts at breaking Udoh’s record by Sporting Lagos’ Junior Lokosa in 2018, who amassed 19 goals before the league’s interruption, and former Lobi Stars striker Anthony Okputu, who also notched 19 goals in 2017, the closest to matching Udoh’s milestone. However, both fell short due to the untimely interruptions that curtailed their goal-scoring pursuits.
Udoh’s hope for a new record stands as a testament to his sportsmanship, welcoming healthy competition and aspiring to witness new heights achieved in Nigeria’s football landscape.
