Former Genk coach hints at Club Brugge’s Onyedika transfer

Posted : 15 April 2025

Former Genk and Gent manager Hein Vanhaezebrouck has stirred speculation about Raphael Onyedika’s future, suggesting the Nigerian midfielder may be on his way out of Club Brugge at the end of the season.

Onyedika, who is 23, was previously linked with Turkish giants Galatasaray during last summer’s transfer window, but he ultimately stayed put with Club Brugge under the leadership of coach Nicky Hayen.

So far this season, the Super Eagles midfielder has recorded two goals and two assists in 45 appearances for the Belgian side across all competitions — a steady contribution in the heart of midfield.

Vanhaezebrouck, who had a spell at Genk in 2009, shared glowing praise for Onyedika after Club Brugge’s recent 1-0 victory over Genk, which featured another Nigerian talent, Tolu Arokodare. He highlighted Onyedika's growing profile and hinted that top clubs across Europe are closely monitoring him.

“He was exceptional. I don’t think Club Brugge will be able to hold onto him after this season,” said the experienced tactician, as quoted by Voetbal Nieuws. “He’s become a powerful presence and has shown his quality throughout Europe.”

Last summer, Club Brugge reportedly placed a €20 million price tag on the midfielder to ward off suitors. However, that valuation is expected to increase significantly if more interest comes in during the upcoming transfer window.

With the summer market approaching, Onyedika’s performances could attract more attention, and Club Brugge may face increasing pressure to cash in on their prized asset.
