Former Crystal Palace owner regrets buying Akinbiyi

Posted : 12 September 2024

Former Crystal Palace CEO, Simon Jordan, has labeled Ade Akinbiyi, a former Nigerian international, as the worst signing he has ever made. Jordan, who ran the club from 2000 to 2010, brought Akinbiyi to Crystal Palace during his second year in charge. However, the striker failed to justify his £2.2 million transfer fee.

Akinbiyi, who made 24 appearances for the Eagles, scored only three goals. Jordan has openly criticized the striker, expressing his dissatisfaction with the signing.

Jordan remarked on TalkSport that Akinbiyi was a poor investment, stating that he was not worth the time or money spent. He described the situation as a clear example of the pitfalls of making poor recruitment decisions and the frustration of not achieving the expected outcomes.

When questioned about who was responsible for the transfer's failure, Jordan acknowledged that the blame was shared. He noted that it was a collective failure involving the player, the manager, and himself. Jordan admitted he should have vetoed the decision but felt compelled to support the manager’s choice.

Reflecting on the situation, Jordan lamented that the money spent on Akinbiyi could have been used to buy a boat instead. He expressed regret over his investment, stating that he ended up with neither a useful player nor the boat he had considered.

Akinbiyi’s struggles at Crystal Palace ultimately prevented him from securing a spot in the Nigerian national team. His inconsistent performances at the club level hindered his international career.

The case of Akinbiyi serves as a cautionary tale about the complexities of player signings and the impact they can have on a club's resources and expectations.
