Kalisto Pasuwa, a former target for the Kaizer Chiefs, has been appointed as the interim coach of Malawi's national team, the Flames. This decision comes just three days after the dismissal of Patrick Mabedi, the previous head coach. The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) officially announced Pasuwa's appointment through a statement released on Friday.
The announcement followed a virtual meeting conducted by FAM to confirm the decision made by its Emergency Committee to let go of Mabedi after a series of disappointing performances. The committee's statement indicated that they approved the formation of a new interim technical panel, with Pasuwa taking the lead. Alongside him, Peter Mponda will serve as the first assistant coach, Prichard Mwansa as the second assistant coach, and Kinnah Phiri and Young Chimodzi will act as technical advisers.

Pasuwa has earned a reputation as a cult hero during his time at FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, where he has guided the team to five consecutive domestic league titles since his arrival from Zimbabwe in 2018. His impressive coaching record positioned him as a strong candidate for the vacant head coach role at the Chiefs, which ultimately went to Tunisian Nasreddine Nabi.
Having won a remarkable nine consecutive league titles, including four with Dynamos in Zimbabwe from 2011 to 2014, Pasuwa is set to start his tenure with an away match against Burundi. This encounter is part of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers and is scheduled for 15 November, although it is classified as a dead rubber match.
Additionally, during the meeting, FAM expressed its support for Dr. Patrice Motsepe, who is seeking a second term as president of the Confederation of African Football. This endorsement highlights FAM's commitment to strengthening African football leadership.
The decision to part ways with Mabedi came after a disappointing streak of four consecutive defeats that eliminated the Flames from contention for the Afcon finals. Under his leadership, the team found itself at the bottom of Group L without a single point, having played four matches in the qualifiers.
Notably, the group's leaders, Senegal, secured their spot in the upcoming Afcon finals by defeating the Flames 1-0 last month, further emphasizing the challenges faced by Mabedi during his time in charge. As Pasuwa takes the reins, he aims to revive the team's fortunes and set them on a path to success in future competitions.
