Former Nigerian footballer John Mikel Obi has pointed out the South African Premier Soccer League's (PSL) exceptional organizational structure, distinguishing it from sub-Saharan counterparts. He emphasized the importance of organizational effectiveness and stated that it is an area Nigeria needs to improve, noting that the PSL provides a stable environment for players to make a living and support their families without going abroad.
Mikel Obi, who spent part of his early career with Plateau United before moving to Europe, highlighted the stark contrast between the PSL and the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) and emphasized the need for Nigeria to nurture its talent, improve its league, and create a conducive environment for player development, similar to what South Africa has achieved.
The South African Premier Soccer League, featuring 16 clubs, is recognized as one of Africa's top five leagues and benefits from substantial television rights deals, generating an annual revenue of around $72 million.
Mikel Obi's insights stem from his extensive experience and success in football, including winning the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea and leading Nigeria to victory in the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations. He also represented the Nigerian national team in 91 matches and scored six goals during his international career from 2005 to 2019.
