Nottingham Forest narrowly advanced to the fifth round of the FA Cup after a tense 4-2 penalty win over 10-man Exeter City, following a 2-2 draw in regular time. Despite fielding a second-string side at St James Park, Forest found themselves in a challenging encounter against the League One team, who took an early lead in the fifth minute. Forest responded with a goal to make it 2-1 but was forced to fight back when Exeter equalized to end the match level.
Exeter’s task became even more difficult in the 87th minute when Ed Turns was shown a straight red card for a high challenge on Forest's Morgan Gibbs-White, leaving the home side with 10 men for the final moments.
Forest, who made 10 changes from their recent dominant 7-0 Premier League win over Brighton & Hove Albion, will now face Ipswich in the next round. The match proved a test for Forest, who struggled to assert dominance against their lower-league opponents.
During the second half, Forest's striker Taiwo Awoniyi was injured after receiving treatment on the pitch and was stretchered off during lengthy stoppage time, further compounding the visitors' challenges.
Despite the setbacks, Forest held their composure in the penalty shootout, ultimately securing their place in the last 16 of the competition.
