Flying Eagles-eligible defender set to depart after over a decade in Arsenal

Posted : 31 May 2023
Zach Awe, a central defender eligible for the Flying Eagles, is preparing to bid farewell to Arsenal this summer as his contract with the club comes to an end.

Awe's journey at Arsenal has spanned an impressive duration of more than ten years, beginning when he joined the club's Hale End Academy at the tender age of eight.

Arsenal managed to secure his signature, triumphing over local rivals Crystal Palace in the process.

According to reliable information shared by Mike McGrath of the Telegraph, Awe has made the decision to depart Arsenal in pursuit of regular first-team football, as he has yet to make his senior debut for the Gunners.

Despite receiving a call-up to the first team for a Premier League encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers in February 2022, Awe unfortunately did not make an appearance on the pitch, remaining an unused substitute under the management of Mikel Arteta.

Interestingly, unlike some of his fellow players, Awe has not been loaned out by Arsenal to gain valuable experience and game time at a higher level.

Throughout his development within the club, Awe initially started his Arsenal journey as a right fullback but was later transitioned into the central defensive position, where his physical attributes flourished.

A significant milestone in Awe's progression came when he made his competitive debut for Arsenal's U18 team in August 2019, even while still a schoolboy.

Subsequently, during the first year of his scholarship, he earned his first appearance for the development squad in a match against Blackburn Rovers.

During the recently concluded season, Awe notably featured prominently for Arsenal's development side, showcasing his skills in 23 appearances in the Premier League 2, the prestigious youth competition.

He also contributed to the team's efforts in the Papa Johns Trophy, making four appearances in the tournament.

Due to his promising performances and potential, Awe has garnered attention from clubs in the EFL Championship, the second tier of English football.

This indicates that his talent and abilities have not gone unnoticed, and there may be exciting opportunities awaiting him as he seeks a new chapter in his football career beyond Arsenal.
