Flying Antelopes express readiness for CAF Champions League match against Union Sportive Zilimadjou

Posted : 12 July 2024

Nigeria Premier Football League 2023/2024 champions, Rangers International FC of Enugu, have expressed readiness to face Union Sportive Zilimadjou following the Confederation of African Football (CAF) draw held on Thursday.

The Nigerian champions have been drawn to play against Comoros Islands' league champions, Union Sportive Zilimadjou, in the first preliminary round of the Total Energies CAF Champions League 2024/2025.

At an elaborate draw ceremony at CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt, the ‘Flying Antelopes’ will first travel to the capital of the island nation, Moroni, where they will engage the nation's champions at the 14,000-capacity Baumer Stadium on either August 16, 17, or 18, 2024, with the return leg in Nigeria a week later.

The club from the three-island nation, formed in 1983, has won the national league championship four times and emerged victorious three times in the national cup competition in Comoros. They will be relying on thirty-one-year-old forward Youssouf Mohamed and his twenty-nine-year-old strike partner Mohamed Anoir Chamoune for goals, while trusting the agility of thirty-year-old shot-stopper Moussa Issihaka to try and prevent Rangers from scoring.

Rangers, who ended the 2023/2024 NPFL season as champions, amassing a total of seventy points and scoring fifty-six goals in the process, have their work cut out and will need to take their domestic form onto the continent as they push to make a significant impact in the Total Energies CAF Champions League 2024/2025.

Coach of the Nigerian champions, Fidelis Ilechukwu, ‘The Building One,’ said of the draw, “No team is a small team on the continent anymore.

"We respect our opponent in the Total Energies CAF Champions League 2024/2025 preliminary round, U.S. Zilimadjou of Comoros.

"We shall give our preparations ahead of the encounter all the attention it deserves. Don’t forget that we are still building this team, and we must be up and doing to ensure that we make an impact in the continental championship.”
