Flick Dismisses "Easy Path" Claims as Barcelona Prepares for Benfica Clash

Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has dismissed the notion that his team has an easy route to the Champions League final as they prepare for their last-16 clash with Benfica. The five-time European champions visit Lisbon for the first leg on Wednesday, with the winner set to face either Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the quarterfinals.

 

 While many of the tournament's biggest contenders, including Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Paris Saint-Germain, are in the opposite half of the draw, Flick emphasized that every match at this stage is a challenge. He praised Benfica as a formidable opponent and highlighted the intimidating atmosphere at their home ground.

 

Flick avoided speculating on which team posed the greatest threat to Barcelona’s title hopes, stressing that his focus remained solely on Benfica. The German coach reiterated the importance of taking each match step by step, noting that every game begins at 0-0 and requires full effort.

 

Barcelona has a recent history with Benfica, having beaten them 5-4 in an exhilarating group-stage encounter. However, Flick acknowledged that his squad must be better prepared defensively to prevent similar struggles. Young defender Pau Cubarsi echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the need for greater concentration and game management, particularly in a two-legged tie.

 

Meanwhile, Benfica faces a setback with midfielders Ángel Di María and Florentino Luís ruled out due to injuries. Coach Bruno Lage confirmed their absence but did not provide a timeline for their return. Cubarsi dismissed claims that Barcelona has the easiest path to the final, asserting that the club should always be aiming to win every competition.

 

 He described Barcelona as the best club in the world and insisted that their focus must be on delivering a strong performance from the first whistle.
