Five Super Eagles players who have had unsuccessful moves this year
Posted : 27 April 2023
1. Maduka Okoye
Okoye was one of Sparta Rotterdam's top players the previous two seasons. In fact, two seasons ago, the Super Eagles shot-stopper was awarded the club's finest player.
Okoye had a significant role in Sparta Rotterdam avoiding relegation for two seasons in a row despite his mistakes for Nigeria. As a result, he won over many fans.
His feats of valor for the Dutch Eredivisie team drew interest from Premier League-bound Watford in England. In order to replace Fraser Forster, the Hornets paid him €5 million for his services.
Since moving to Vicarage Road, Okoye hasn't been allowed to join the team, though. The 23-year-old goalie has only made two cup appearances this season.
2. Calvin Bassey
Last year, the top players for Rangers were Bassey and Aribo. For Bassey, his efforts in the Europa League last year attracted attention. And they raced in to get the adaptable Nigerian defender after Ajax lost Lisandro Martinez to Manchester United last summer.
Unfortunately, Bassey has had a forgettable season. Despite the 23-year-old midfielder's 24 appearances this season, he has frequently been the subject of attention.
He has frequently been criticized for his inability to use the ball by ex-Ajax players. The club's third-place finish, which would be its worst since 2009, is also a concern.
3. Cyriel Dessers
Many believed it was time for him to make a significant move after his heroics in the Europa Conference League the previous season, when he contributed 10 goals and two assists in the lead-up to Feyenoord's second-place finish.
Dessers, though, was only given a transfer to the recently promoted Cremonese last summer. And thus far, the decision has been shown to be incorrect.
Except for a miracle, Cremonese are mired in 19th place in Serie A and appear headed for relegation. In 25 games for the Grigiorossi, Dessers has scored just six goals, and it appears that he will play Serie B football with them next year.
4. Paul Onuachu
When Onuachu scored 33 goals for Genk three seasons ago, he made his name known to the rest of Europe and helped his team to a second-place finish in the Jupiler League. Following his achievements, he was linked to other elite clubs, including Arsenal, Lyon, and Atletico Madrid. Genk, though, declined to sell him.
After scoring 21 goals in 35 games while playing for Genk previous season, the 28-year-old forward was still unable to depart in the summer.
Onuachu scored 16 goals for Genk in his first 19 league appearances, which was a tremendous start to the year. He was then signed by Southampton in January.
Onuachu, unfortunately, has had a rough time ever since he joined the club. He has had difficulty getting into games, and he is yet to score after nine games.
5. Joe Aribo
Aribo moved from Rangers to Southampton last summer. The Super Eagles midfielder, who was instrumental in the Gers' victory in 2021, was the talk of the Scottish Premiership.
It was obvious that a move was anticipated at the conclusion of the previous season. There were discussions about working together with Steven Gerrard, the former manager of Aston Villa, but he ended up joining Southampton.
Unfortunately, the 26-year-old's expectations have not been fulfilled. This season, Aribo has only made 20 appearances, the majority of which have been as a substitute. He has only played seven times for the Saints so far this year. His future is also uncertain because the club is struggling mightily to survive in the Premier League.
