The race for the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year award remains fiercely competitive, with the five nominees keeping the suspense high ahead of the ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco. Organizers have decided to maintain the full list of candidates due to the narrow margin between them, making this one of the most tightly contested awards in recent history. The ceremony will take place at the Palais des Congrès, starting at 19h00 local time (18h00 GMT).
The nominees include Simon Adingra from Côte d'Ivoire, who was instrumental in his country’s Africa Cup of Nations victory, contributing key goals and assists. Adingra’s performances for Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League further highlight his growing stature.
Another nominee, Serhou Guirassy of Guinea, has been exceptional for both his club, Borussia Dortmund, and his national team, with an impressive 28 goals in the Bundesliga last season and significant contributions in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Achraf Hakimi, the Moroccan right-back, also earned a spot on the list due to his strong performances for Paris Saint-Germain, including a Ligue 1 title and a Coupe de France victory. Hakimi’s leadership on the field, combined with his important role in Morocco’s successful campaign in the Paris Olympic Games, makes him a standout nominee.
Ademola Lookman of Nigeria is another contender, having played a pivotal role in Atalanta's title challenge and their victory in the UEFA Europa League, while also making key contributions to Nigeria's performance in the Africa Cup of Nations.
The final nominee, Ronwen Williams of South Africa, has earned recognition for his exceptional goalkeeping, particularly his penalty saves during the Africa Cup of Nations in 2023, which helped South Africa secure a bronze medal.
Williams also led Mamelodi Sundowns to a record seventh consecutive South African Premiership title, conceding the fewest goals in the league. The nominees represent a range of positions and achievements, underscoring the diversity and excellence in African football for the year.
