Rivers United claimed their first win of the season with a 3-1 victory over Heartland FC at the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.
Rivers United’s new signing, Taofeek Otaniyi, scored the opener with an assist from Aniekeme Okon after three minutes.
Heartland fought back to level the score in first-half stoppage time through Christian Molokwu.
The home side turned on the style after the break, with Kabir Abdullahi scoring twice to secure the victory for his team.
After the match, Rivers United head coach Finidi George said his side deserved the maximum points against the Nazi Millionaires.
“It was a good game. We started with a high tempo, and after that goal, the tempo dropped, and Heartland started playing. Unfortunately, they scored, and we were furious about it,” Finidi told journalists after the game.
“We had to motivate the boys, especially in the second half. The second half was ours; they couldn’t do much apart from one or two breaks. We controlled the game, and overall, we deserved to win.
“The team is practically new, so we have been working with the players tactically and technically, and they are responding.”
The Pride of Rivers will next face Lobi Stars in a Matchday three encounter on Saturday, September 21st, in Makurdi.
