FIFA investigates misconduct allegations against Zambia women's coach Bruce Mwape, accusing inappropriate conduct

FIFA has confirmed that it is investigating an allegation of misconduct related to the Zambia women's national team during the World Cup. The allegation involves Zambia's coach, Bruce Mwape, who has been accused of inappropriate conduct with one of his players just two days before their final group game against Costa Rica.
Zambia, making their World Cup debut, secured their country's first-ever victory at the finals by beating Costa Rica. However, they exited the tournament at the group stage after losses to Japan and Spain.
FIFA takes such allegations very seriously and has a strict process in place for reporting incidents. A complaint has been received, and an investigation is currently underway. Due to confidentiality reasons, further details about the ongoing investigation cannot be provided.
FIFA encourages anyone with information related to abuse in football to report it via their confidential reporting platform. They ensure that all information is handled with utmost confidentiality and offer support and assistance to those who report safeguarding issues.
The allegations have overshadowed Zambia's historic win, and Mwape, who has been the coach since 2018, is under scrutiny. Prior to their game against Spain, the news conference ended abruptly as reporters persisted with questions about a previous investigation concerning misconduct within women's football in Zambia.
Last September, the Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) referred an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse to FIFA. Mwape was reported to be among those under investigation. The Guardian article published in July featured an anonymous player stating that "if he [Mwape] wants to sleep with someone, you have to say yes."
Despite the controversy, Zambia's team created history in New Zealand with their landmark victory against Costa Rica. Captain Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji scored as they recorded the nation's first-ever World Cup win, marking a significant milestone for Zambian football.
