FIFA has expressed its excitement following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board's approval of a proposal to expand the Olympic Football Tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 Games (LA28).
The decision will see the women's competition grow to 16 teams and the men's tournament remain at 12 teams. This change is seen as a significant milestone for women's football, highlighting the commitment to advancing women's sports globally.
The expansion of the women's football tournament reflects a collaborative effort between FIFA, the IOC, and LA28 to elevate the profile of women's sports, particularly in the United States. This move aims to provide more opportunities for women players and participating nations, showcasing the growing strength and popularity of women's football worldwide.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino expressed his approval of the decision, emphasizing the organization's ongoing investment in women's football. He noted that expanding the Olympic field for women would lead to more role models, greater inspiration, and increased global impact.
Infantino also reiterated FIFA’s clear vision of supporting and expanding opportunities for women at every level of the sport.
FIFA Secretary General Mattias Grafström thanked the IOC for their cooperation and highlighted the importance of this decision in increasing the representation of women's football.
The move aligns with FIFA's long-standing advocacy for more women's teams in the Olympics, particularly in line with Goal 7 of FIFA's Strategic Objectives for 2023-2027. This decision builds on the success of the FIFA Women's World Cup 2023™, which saw the tournament expand to 32 teams, further amplifying the global interest in women's football.
