FIFA announces African Football League, eight teams, focusing on club and national team football
Posted : 14 July 2023
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has confirmed that the new African Football League, consisting of eight teams, will commence on October 20. The tournament has been scaled down from its original plan of including 24 teams.
Infantino expressed the importance of investing in both African club football and national team football during his announcement at the Confederation of Africa Football's General Assembly in Abidjan.
While the official list of participating teams has not yet been confirmed by CAF, sources indicate that the eight teams will include Mamelodi Sundowns from South Africa, Petro Atletico from Angola, TP Mazembe from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Al Ahly from Egypt, Horoya from Guinea, Wydad Casablanca from Morocco, Simba from Tanzania, and Esperance from Tunisia.
The African Football League will run alongside CAF's Champions League, which features domestic league winners from across the continent. The new league is not intended to replace the Champions League. Further details regarding broadcasters, sponsors, and logistics are currently unknown. The initial proposal promised $100 million in prize money, with $11.5 million awarded to the winner.
The league was envisioned to create a solidarity fund, providing $1 million per year to each of CAF's 54 member associations for football development. It is unclear if this plan remains unchanged. CAF President Patrice Motsepe has emphasized the need to enhance African football's global appeal, with the new league playing a vital role in achieving this objective.
Motsepe called on association presidents and governments across the continent to increase investments in the sport, including coaching programs, academies, and resources for professional clubs.
The African Football League aims to elevate African football's commercial viability and sustainability while nurturing talent and aspiring for an African nation to win the World Cup in the future.
