FIFA announces 2025 US Club World Cup with 32 teams
Posted : 23 June 2023
FIFA made an announcement stating that the Club World Cup in 2025 will take place in the United States. The tournament will undergo significant changes that year, including the participation of 32 teams. This expanded format will include the previous winners of the Champions League, the Copa Libertadores, and additional teams from Central and North America.
While the World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico is scheduled for the summer of 2026, FIFA revealed their plans for the new format of the Club World Cup starting in 2025. The tournament will feature a broader and more prestigious structure in the United States.
The tournament will include European teams, with Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Manchester City, the last three Champions League winners, already guaranteed participation. They will be joined by the 2024 Champions League winner and eight other teams based on the UEFA ranking in that year.
Confirmed participants also include Palmeiras and Flamengo from Brazil, who secured their spots by winning the Copa Libertadores, as well as Monterrey and Leon, the winners of the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 2021 and 2023.
The representative from the MLS league will be the Seattle Sounders. Further teams will be announced as the tournament approaches.
It is worth noting that the United States has been selected to host the Copa America in 2024, the Club World Cup in 2025, and the World Cup in 2026.
This demonstrates the country's and FIFA's efforts to further expand the influence of the Western market in global soccer.
