FIFA Accused of Withholding Final Payments to Contract-Denied Players in Europe

FIFA has faced allegations regarding its failure to pay the final installments of agreed-upon sums to players across Europe whose contracts have not been fulfilled by their clubs. Various sources from multiple countries familiar with the situation report that while some payments were made by the organization, the last portion remains unpaid. This has left many of the affected players, who are either unemployed or retired, in a precarious financial situation, making these outstanding sums particularly critical for them.

 

The funds in question were supposed to be disbursed from FIFA's Fund for Players, which was established in 2020 to assist those affected by contract disputes. The payments that are currently overdue were expected to be released in September 2023. An email from a national union has been brought to light, revealing concerns over more than 30 identified players and the financial hardships they are enduring. This communication urged FIFA to expedite the release of these overdue funds.

 

In total, approximately 420 players are reported to be owed around £3.09 million, highlighting the extent of the financial obligations FIFA has yet to meet. The ongoing delay in payments has led to rising tensions as players and their representatives seek resolution. As these individuals navigate their uncertain futures, the situation underscores the significant role that FIFA plays in safeguarding players’ rights and financial well-being.

 

Compounding the issues, FIFA is also embroiled in a dispute with the global players' union, FIFPro, over modifications to the international match calendar. FIFPro, supported by the Professional Footballers' Association, argues that the demands placed on elite players have become excessive, increasing the likelihood of injuries.

 

A major point of contention is the expanded 32-team Club World Cup, which is set to be held in the USA next summer. As of now, FIFA has yet to finalize television contracts for the event or announce the associated prize money, further contributing to the uncertainty surrounding the tournament.
