Feyenoord release 28-year-old Babalola ahead of AC Milan clash

Posted : 11 February 2025

Feyenoord have decided to part company with assistant coach Lucas Andersson Babalola just days before their crucial Champions League encounter with AC Milan. The decision is part of a broader restructuring within the Dutch club’s coaching staff.

The 28-year-old coach departs along with head coach Brian Priske and fellow assistant Björn Hamberg, following a period of inconsistent performances. General and technical director Dennis te Kloese pointed to the team's struggles and lack of steady progress as the primary reasons behind the managerial changes.

"It is unfortunate for all involved that we had to take this step," te Kloese stated. "Although Brian led the team to some remarkable results, especially in the Champions League, the overall performance has lacked consistency, and we haven't seen the development we expected."

Despite securing a convincing 3-0 win over Sparta Rotterdam recently, Priske's tenure had already been undermined by poor results. Heavy defeats, including a crushing 6-1 loss to Lille in Europe, as well as setbacks against Ajax and PSV in domestic competitions, ultimately sealed his fate.

Babalola had been a key member of Priske’s coaching setup, dating back to their successful time together at Sparta Prague. He played a pivotal role in the club’s league and cup double last season before joining Feyenoord as part of Priske’s backroom staff. Recognized for his tactical awareness and analytical skills, he was a trusted figure within the coaching team.

His coaching career began in Denmark, where he gained a reputation for his expertise in match analysis. His impact at Sparta Prague in 2023 was highly regarded, which led Priske to push for his appointment at Feyenoord when he took charge.

Now, with their time in the Netherlands cut short, Feyenoord must quickly reorganize their coaching structure ahead of their high-stakes match against AC Milan. The club faces the challenge of stabilizing their season while seeking new leadership for the team.
