Feyenoord claimed a 1-0 victory over AC Milan in the first leg of their Champions League playoff, capitalizing on a goalkeeping mistake from Mike Maignan. Brazilian winger Igor Paixao opened the scoring just three minutes in when his speculative shot from the left skidded off the wet turf and slipped through Maignan’s gloves.
The early goal set the tone for an energetic performance from Feyenoord, who showed no signs of instability despite parting ways with their coach Brian Priske just two days prior.
Paixao remained a constant threat throughout the match, giving Milan’s defense a difficult time, particularly troubling right-back Kyle Walker. The winger nearly doubled the lead with a curling effort that grazed the crossbar in the first half, while his creativity also set up substitute Julian Carranza, who missed from close range.
Milan had their own chances, with Rafael Leao coming close twice before halftime, but solid defending from Feyenoord kept them at bay. Torrential rain further complicated the match, limiting clear-cut opportunities for both sides.
In the latter stages, Milan pressed for an equalizer but struggled to break down Feyenoord’s disciplined backline. Tijjani Reijnders, returning to the Netherlands, was largely subdued but nearly scored with a dipping volley in the 70th minute. Mexican forward Santiago Gimenez, who recently transferred from Feyenoord to Milan, also had a quiet outing.
The best chance for the visitors came from Samuel Chukwueze, whose powerful long-range shot was comfortably saved. With the narrow win, Feyenoord takes a slight advantage into the return leg at San Siro next Tuesday, where the aggregate winner will advance to the Champions League last 16.
