Feyenoord Advance to Champions League Last 16 After Draw at AC Milan

Posted : 19 February 2025

Feyenoord's interim coach, Pascal Bosschaart, praised his team’s resilience after they overcame early adversity to secure a draw against AC Milan and advance to the Champions League last 16. The Dutch club had faced significant turbulence in the lead-up to their playoff tie, with the sudden dismissal of Brian Priske just two days before the first leg. Despite the upheaval, Bosschaart guided Feyenoord to a 1-0 home victory before sealing qualification with a strong performance at the San Siro on Tuesday.

Reflecting on his squad's determination, Bosschaart highlighted their ability to stay focused despite the challenges. He acknowledged that the team had gone through a tough period, dealing with criticism and an unexpected coaching change, yet responded positively under his leadership. While recognizing the difficulties of stepping into an unfamiliar role, he credited the squad’s openness to his approach, which emphasized clarity, honesty, and transparency. He expressed immense pride in their commitment and adaptability during this transition.

Feyenoord had a rocky start in Milan, conceding an early goal to former player Santiago Gimenez in the first minute. However, they remained composed and improved in the second half, especially after Milan’s Theo Hernandez was sent off. Bosschaart admitted that conceding so early forced a shift in their game plan but emphasized that his team had played well even before the red card. While the numerical advantage made things slightly easier, he believed their strong first-half display demonstrated their quality and ability to compete at the highest level.

With Feyenoord now advancing, they could return to the San Siro in the next round to face either Inter Milan or Arsenal. However, Bosschaart is taking a moment to appreciate the magnitude of their achievement. He described the qualification as a special moment for the club, even though it had not fully sunk in yet. For now, Feyenoord will relish their success before turning their attention to the challenges ahead in the knockout stages.
