FC Köln manager explains why Boniface is more valuable than Kane in Bundesliga
Posted : 17 August 2023
FC Köln's head coach, Steffen Baumgart, has expressed his perspective on the impact of new Bundesliga signings, suggesting that Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface holds greater promise than Bayern Munich's high-profile addition, Harry Kane.
Amid Kane's much-anticipated move from Tottenham Hotspur to Bayern Munich, Baumgart remains cautious, referencing Sadio Mane's short-lived stint at Bayern as an example of a previously hyped player not living up to expectations.
Baumgart revealed, "You could see his quality, but he didn't become the savior that he was made to be when he was signed."
Although Kane's transfer to Bayern marked a significant moment in Bundesliga history due to its substantial cost, Baumgart expressed a different approach for FC Bayern, indicating that the club could not afford Kane and wouldn't have pursued him regardless.
Instead, Baumgart favors Bayer Leverkusen's Victor Boniface, considering him a more suitable choice within FC Köln's financial limitations.
Baumgart sees Boniface, a 22-year-old Nigerian forward, as "one of the best strikers in Europe," citing his young age and potential for development.
Baumgart's confidence in Boniface is supported by the Nigerian striker's impactful performances during Bayer Leverkusen's preseason matches, where he showcased his scoring ability.
With goals in both friendly and competitive fixtures, Boniface is set to make his Bundesliga debut for Bayer Leverkusen against RB Leipzig this weekend.
