FC Copenhagen’s latest signing, German Onugkha, is now considering representing the Super Eagles after previously rejecting a call-up from the Russian national team for their September 2024 internationals.
Onugkha was initially included in Russia's squad for friendlies against Thailand and Vietnam, but he chose to withdraw from the roster. Although born in Moscow to a Russian mother and a Nigerian father, Onugkha had previously expressed a desire to play for Russia. However, he has now shifted his focus to the possibility of representing Nigeria.
The forward plans to visit the Nigerian embassy in Copenhagen in the coming weeks to apply for a Nigerian passport. Onugkha expressed his decision to turn down the Russian call-up, stating that his priority was to focus on his new club and future in Europe.
In a recent interview following his unofficial debut for FC Copenhagen in a friendly against Landskrona BoIS, Onugkha explained his reasoning. He emphasized his intention to obtain a Nigerian passport due to his father's heritage and expressed his commitment to exploring this new opportunity.
The 28-year-old has not yet reached out to the Nigerian Football Federation, but this step will follow if he successfully acquires the passport. Onugkha mentioned the example of Bryan Idowu, a Russian-born defender who played for the Super Eagles at the 2018 World Cup, as a source of inspiration.
Onugkha’s agent has advised him to first secure a Nigerian passport and then initiate contact with the Nigerian football authorities. He emphasized that obtaining the passport is the first priority, and subsequent discussions with his family and agent will determine the next steps.
Previously, Onugkha played for several clubs, including Krasnodar, Tambov, Krylia Sovetov, and Rubin Kazan. Last season, he was the top scorer in the Danish Superliga, netting 15 goals for Vejle Boldklub.
