FC Bako edges defending champions, Kogi Central FC to win Kogi State President Federation Cup

Two goals in the second half were all FC Bako needed to dethrone defending champions, Kogi Central FC, and emerge as the 2025 Kogi State President Federation Cup champions at a fully packed Lokoja Confluence Stadium Complex.

Both finalists entered the encounter with confidence, fresh energy, and determination to lift this year's title and represent the Confluence State at the national playoffs. However, it was FC Bako who triumphed after a tense 90 minutes, during which both sides displayed skill and class to the admiration of the fans and supporters who came to watch.

The first half was action-packed, and either team could have taken the lead, but both were inconsistent in front of goal, squandering numerous scoring opportunities.

FC Bako had Abdul Sebogo Kabir to thank for mounting a strong resistance against the relentless and energetic attacking frontline of the defending champions.

He did not disappoint his employers, fans, and supporters on this crucial day, producing masterclass saves throughout the game.

Kogi Central FC was reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute after Onumoko Mohammed was shown a red card for a ruthless tackle on an opponent. All appeals for the referee to overturn his decision were dismissed.

FC Bako took the lead with a superb finish after a goalmouth scramble in Kogi Central FC’s penalty area. However, Kogi Central FC responded immediately and equalized three minutes later. The game became more intense as both sides searched for the winning goal to avoid a penalty shootout, often referred to as a game of luck.

The decisive goal came in the 76th minute from FC Bako. All efforts by the defending champions to equalize for the second time were met with stiff resistance from FC Bako’s backline.

Daniel Orakpo stood rock solid in defense, ensuring they did not relinquish their lead. Abdul Sebogo Kabir’s five-star performance also proved crucial in securing the victory for the new champions.

An elated Coach Anthony Wilson credited his team's confidence, determination, and resilience as the key factors that secured them the title.

He commended the Kogi State Football Association for its excellent organization and execution of the tournament, promising to make the state proud at the national playoffs.

Chairman of the Kogi State Football Association, Mallam Hassan Wada, who watched the match alongside other board members and dignitaries, including Kogi United FC Chairman Honourable Abdulmalik Isah, described the encounter as "very exciting and explosive."

“The talent pool was massive and very promising. As chairman, I will facilitate trials for some of the players who have distinguished themselves with the junior national teams.”

For the second consecutive year, FC Bako and Kogi Central FC will represent Kogi State at the National Playoffs of the President Federation Cup later in the year.
