It's three unexpected points for traveling Abia Warriors as they bravely earned a victory against Kano Pillars, a team that had not lost a home match in two years.
In the 2023/2024 Nigeria Premier Football League Match Day 23 at the iconic Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano, Erasmus Onuh's team secured one of the most significant away wins by defeating Kano Pillars 1-0 in front of their vociferous fans. Daniel Ijeh scored the only goal in the 78th minute.
Abia Warriors' goalkeeper, Nmecha Johnson, emerged as the hero of the day with an excellent save that kept the rampaging Kano Pillars strikers at bay, especially with his double save in the 48th minute. Earlier, he had denied the host in the 15th minute by parrying a Kano Pillars cross, and the follow-up shot went wide.
Sai Masu Gida had a goal disallowed as Godwin Udoh's tap-in from a follow-up effort after a cleared corner kick by Omaka Fabian in the 32nd minute was judged offside by Referee Abdulmalik.
However, things turned chaotic after the match as angry fans confronted the match officials, blaming them for the disallowed goal against Pillars in the dying minutes.
Armed riot policemen had to escort the match officials off the field as missiles were thrown at them. A canopy was deployed to protect the players as they were also held hostage in the stadium.
