With high expectations and charged adrenaline, the much-awaited 2024/2025 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season is set to kick off on August 31 with a blockbuster opening match between defending champions Rangers International FC and the Premier League returnee, the 2024 President Federation Cup winners, El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri.
The 2024/2025 NPFL will feature a staggering 380 matches to determine which of the 20 clubs will emerge as the league winners after playing 38 matches each, all in a bid to snatch the coveted crown from the Flying Antelopes, who are now eight-time winners.
Additionally, the coming season will see four clubs battling against relegation—a familiar struggle that has previously seen teams like Sporting Lagos FC, Doma United FC, Gombe United FC, and Heartland FC demoted to lower leagues.
For the 2024/2025 season, we will preview the contenders, pretenders, and defenders.
How are these clubs preparing for the season’s challenges as we head into the new season?
As the 2024/2025 NPFL season approaches, anticipation is high. Many NPFL teams have declared their intentions through pre-season tournaments and the transfer market, which has been particularly active recently.
In fact, most NPFL clubs have been very active in the transfer market, with some clubs making as many as 17 new signings, while others have added up to seven new players.
Notable pre-season tournaments include the Value Jet Pre-Season Tournament, won by Remo Stars after defeating Ikorodu City; the Unity Pre-Season Cup in Abuja, won by Like Minds of Abuja; the Gov. Diri Preseason in Yenagoa, won by Bayelsa United; the Optima Energy Tournament in Ijebu-Ode, won by Shooting Stars FC; the Maiden Coal City Pre-Season Tournament, won by Rangers International after beating Shooting Stars; and the Ahlan/Gusau tournament in Jos, and the Tico Select in Ebonyi, which are still ongoing.
Teams at a Glance:
Rangers International FC
Despite being the defending champions, the Flying Antelopes' pre-season preparations have been mixed. However, the team did not disappoint by winning the inaugural Coal City Pre-Season competition held in Enugu. This victory, however, is not necessarily a definitive gauge of the team’s performance for the upcoming season.
Founded in 1950, Rangers International is well-known in Nigeria's football community. They are eight-time league champions, having won the cup in 1974, 1975, 1977, 1981, 1982, 1984, 2016, and 2024. They are also six-time FA Cup winners (1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, 1983, and 2018) and won the Nigerian Super Cup once in 2004.
Rangers International FC also emerged as the runners-up in the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1975 and the African Cup Winners' Cup in 1977.
The big question is: Can Fidelis Ilechukwu lead the Flying Antelopes to a double victory, or does the team have what it takes to chase the existing record set by Enyimba International FC and claim an unprecedented 9th title?
The motivation behind Rangers International winning the 2023/2024 NPFL title is high, and fans will be eager to see if they can maintain that level of success this season.
In the fierce competition for the NPFL title, Rangers International faces challenges from teams such as 10-time winners Enyimba International (arguably the most successful club in Nigeria), the wounded Remo Stars, the rejuvenated Shooting Stars of Ibadan, ambitious Rivers United FC, and possibly Lobi Stars of Makurdi.
For other clubs, the various pre-season tournaments have provided an invaluable opportunity to test tactics, assess new signings, and build team cohesion.
Rangers International's pre-season performance has been below expectations, but the Technical Adviser has stated that there is no need to panic just yet. The Flying Antelopes have been active in the transfer market, although the exodus of players within the team is a cause for concern.
Officially, Rangers International FC has announced the signing of 10 players ahead of the new season.
To strengthen their squad for a successful NPFL title defense and a fruitful continental challenge, the Flying Antelopes have continued their spending spree in the transfer window. Notable signings include former Niger Tornadoes winger Clinton Jephter, who signed a one-year deal, left-back Evans Ogbonda from Bendel Insurance, and Bayelsa United midfielder Ekeson Okorie.
Other new additions are midfielder Nwobodo Somtochukwu from FC Cincinnati II, midfielder Garando Tekena from Bayelsa United, and forward Anayor Ogbonna from Gombe United.
Despite their efforts, Rangers International FC faces challenges with player departures that may impact the stability of the team.
Odds of winning the league: 7/10
Odds to relegate: 2/10
Enyimba International
Another team in the spotlight is the People's Elephant, who are always pushing for the title and are often contenders until the last match of the season.
Enyimba International is the biggest name in Nigerian football; in addition to being a record 10-time winner of the league, the team achieved the remarkable feat of winning the CAF Champions League back-to-back in 2003 and 2004—an accomplishment no other Nigerian club has matched.
The People's Elephant have also been active in the transfer market, acquiring 13 new players, including midfielder Austin Onyemachi from Rangers International FC, Nathaniel Asibe from Sporting Lagos FC, Kalu Nweke, also from Rangers International, Wasiu Jimoh from Zesco FC, Zambia, Chidera Eze from Katsina United FC, Francis Odinaka from Lobi Stars, center forward Ismail Sarki from Bendel Insurance, goalkeeper Zalli Abdullahi from Doma United FC, Moses Adikwu from Plateau United, Divine Uradike from Heartland International FC, and Ogbo Ogochukwu from Sunshine Stars of Akure.
The Aba Giants also announced the departure of 13 players, including their longest-serving goalkeeper, Ojo Olorunleke, and NPFL top scorer Chijioke Mbaoma.
The departed players are: Olorunleke Ojo, Desmond Ojietefian, Chigozie Chilekwu, Ngomere Chisom, Anthony Okachi, Chibuike Nwaiwu, James Orasonye, Chijioke Mbaoma, Ikenna Cooper, George Owen, MacBen Otika, Uche Collins, and Tochukwu Emmanuel.
Furthermore, this season, the People's Elephant have made a bold move by appointing the less-exposed Yemi Olanrewaju as an assistant to the departed former league-winning coach, Finidi George, who left for the coveted Super Eagles job. However, after being dismissed, Finidi joined rival club Rivers United.
For Olanrewaju, the 2024/2025 NPFL will be his first major test in the high-stakes Nigerian league, which is known for its drama and intrigue.
It remains to be seen if Olanrewaju will have the courage to compete with other top coaches in the NPFL.
Odds of winning the league: 8/10
Odds to relegate: 2/10
Remo Stars FC
The Sky Blue Stars are known for their high ambition of winning the NPFL, a goal they have been pursuing and have achieved second and third-place finishes for about four years now.
The energy and dedication of Remo Stars' coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, have been unparalleled, with significant victories in away matches and a fearless attitude towards opponents.
For the second season in a row, Remo Stars FC has been eager to win the league, while their supporters have experienced pride and also regret. In the 2022/2023 NPFL season, they came agonizingly close to their first Premier League title, narrowly missing out to Enyimba International FC, and this scene repeated itself in the 2023/2024 season with Rangers International FC.
Still, Remo Stars' fans can find encouragement from the improvements made in the 2023/24 NPFL season as they look forward to the 2024/2025 season.
Clearly, Remo Stars have the resilience for the fight—and they have a better squad than last season. Could it be third time lucky? The team has also been unfortunate in continental football, having been knocked out of the CAF Confederation Cup by AS FAR of Morocco in controversial circumstances.
With renewed vigor, the Sky Blue Stars can focus on the league, having acquired about 10 new players, including left-back Sani Faisal from Kano Pillars, Shuaibu Ibrahim, Ibrahim Abubakar from Kano Pillars, Ifeanyi Anaemena from Abia Warriors, Serge Obassa from Cotonou FC, Benin Republic, Emmanuel Nwokeji from Sporting Lagos FC, Thankgod Ikeagwu from Kwara United, Alex Owoyah from Rivers United, and Raymond Tochukwu from Sporting Lagos FC.
Odds of winning the league: 8/10
Odds to relegate: 2/10
Shooting Stars FC
The Oluyole Warriors’ pedigree in Nigerian football history is unquestionable, as they are one of the most successful traditional clubs remaining in the scene, unlike others such as Julius Berger, Stationary Stores, Ranchers Bees of Kaduna, Leventis FC, Abiola Babes, and Calabar Rivers.
The Oluyole Warriors have won the league five times (1976, 1980, 1983, 1995, and 1998). They are also Nigerian FA Cup winners eight times (1959, 1961, 1966, 1969, 1971 as WNDC, 1977, 1979, and 1995).
The Oluyole Warriors were the first Nigerian club to win a CAF club competition when they secured the CAF Cup in 1992, and they were runners-up in the African Cup of Champions Clubs in 1984 and 1996.
It has been 26 years since the Oluyole Warriors won their last league title, which was during the time of Duke Udi and Olumide Harrison as top scorer. Fans will eagerly await another crowning achievement for the team.
All eyes will be on Coach Gbenga Ogunbote to work his magic and win the coveted Premier League crown.
Ogunbote is not new to Nigeria's football scene, so winning the league should be within reach.
Perhaps the biggest victory for Ogunbote in the pre-season was winning the 2024 Optima Gold Cup in Ikenne against all odds, defeating potential NPFL debutant Beyond Limits in the final.
This win should serve as strong motivation for the Oluyole Warriors ahead of the season's opener.
In the transfer market, Shooting Stars have signed Ikouwem Utin, a left-back from AS Marsa in Tunisia on a free transfer, Adebayo Abayomi, a defensive midfielder from Remo Stars, Abubakar Ibrahim Aliyu, a center-forward from Lobi Stars FC, Bolaji Sakin, a center-forward from AS Otôho Congo, Abiodun Akande, a goalkeeper from Rivers United FC, Mustapha Lawal, also a goalkeeper from Sunshine Stars, Samuel Ayanrinde, a striker from Sporting Lagos FC, and Desmond Ojietefian, a center-back from Enyimba.
Notable players who left Shooting Stars include captain Taofeek Malomo, Aniyikaye Adeleye, Okiemute Odah, Mohammed Hadi, Gbolagade Adelowo, and Ayobami Adekunle.
Odds of winning the league: 7/10
Odds to relegate: 3/10
Rivers United
One notable move by the Pride of Rivers this season is the recruitment of former league winner Finidi George as their coach, which is a bold step.
For the 2022/2023 NPFL winners, returning the crown to Port Harcourt remains an achievable target with Finidi George at the helm.
The Pride of Rivers have largely abstained from pre-season activities, opting for a low profile. This might be a good strategy, but it could also backfire as the players have not had many opportunities to be tested.
Finidi George is familiar with Nigerian football, having previously excelled with Enyimba International FC.
One key factor for the Pride of Rivers will be the financial backing to motivate the team to victory.
The question is: can Rivers United progress this season under new head coach Finidi George?
Finidi George is known for his preference for high-pressing football and a specific style of play.
The league winners have been tactical and revolutionary under the leadership of the sacked coach Stanley Eguma, who ended a 15-year wait for the league title.
Now, Finidi is tasked with maintaining Eguma's ideas while subtly updating them; evolving the squad without dismantling the legacy; and ensuring a smooth transition.
Replacing Eguma is a significant challenge for the Pride of Rivers' new manager.
Sheer exhaustion, both physical and emotional, was Rivers United's only downfall last season, after a strenuous campaign for the elusive CAF Confederation Cup, which they lost in the quarter-finals to Moroccan opposition.
This season, there is hope that fresh ideas and high-pressing football can bring the desired success.
Additionally, Rivers United have kept their transfer activities close to the chest, with news only about the players who have left their ranks, including Owoyah and the team captain.
Odds of winning the league: 7/10
Odds to relegate: 4/10
Plateau United FC
The Peace Boys were unexpected contenders last season, thanks to the ingenuity of their coach, Mbwas Mangut, who took over from the departed Fidelis Ilechukwu.
Mangut has shown intensity and bravery in pursuing the club’s dream of claiming the league title.
As another year begins, the Peace Boys will be seeking consistency and aiming to secure a continental ticket.
The club has seen minimal turnover in management and has enjoyed player stability, which has facilitated team bonding.
Despite finishing fifth last season—below their target—the head coach Mangut is now focused on another long chase.
Mangut has been working tirelessly to build a competitive squad, and the new signings are expected to bolster their chances in the upcoming season. Plateau United will kick off their campaign with a match against Katsina United.
With the addition of fresh talent, Plateau United is poised to make a strong impact in the NPFL this season. The team’s fans are optimistic about their chances, and the unveiling ceremony marks an exciting new chapter for the club.
Odds of winning the league: 6/10
Odds to relegate: 4/10
Lobi Stars FC
For Lobi Stars of Makurdi, they were one of the biggest disappointments of the NPFL last season, having dominated the summit of the table for about 10 weeks but ultimately failing to qualify for continental football.
Coach Eugene Agagbe appears to have underachieved, given the team's performance and his own results in the final league fixtures.
Agagbe needs to make significant changes to the way his team plays this season. Tactical adjustments are necessary to avoid repeating last season's experience.
Team cohesion and the effective interpretation of tactical instructions will be crucial if they hope to achieve anything this season.
Odds of winning the league: 6/10
Odds to relegate: 4/10
Kwara United
For Kwara United, there is a loud ambition to play in continental football next season.
Coach Kabiru Dogo has been vocal about this ambition, alongside the enthusiastic statements from the club's management.
Kwara United fans may feel a bit pessimistic heading into the new season, as the team struggled with relegation battles last season.
To demonstrate their intent for the upcoming season, the management of the Harmony Boys has unveiled 17 new players, joining the retained 18 from last season.
The team also commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his prompt attention and effective funding of the club.
The new top players were recruited from major clubs, including Rangers United FC and Plateau United, to ensure Kwara United makes a significant impact in the new league season.
Notable signings include Ifeanyi Ogba, a former mobile attacker from Rangers International; Ayeleso Suraj, a seasoned NPFL goalkeeper from Plateau United; and Akanni Akeem from Sporting Lagos.
Odds of winning the league: 5/10
Odds to relegate: 5/10
Kano Pillars
The Sai Masu Gida, two-time league winners, will be aiming for glory next season after a disappointing performance in the 2023/2024 NPFL.
The disappointment led to the sacking of former coach Abdul Maikaba, who was dismissed for what the management described as insubordination.
Maikaba was replaced by Paul Offor, a former Sporting Lagos FC coach, but Offor was also sacked when the Kano State government dissolved the management and board to reconstitute a new one. Usman Abdallah was subsequently appointed as the new coach.
Kano Pillars have not made significant moves in the transfer market, but it is believed that the club is doing all it can.
Odds of winning the league: 5/10
Odds to relegate: 5/10
Katsina United
The Changi Boys may seem like an average club, but they have proven to be resilient in difficult matches.
Katsina United was one of the few clubs that did not register a home loss throughout last season's campaign.
In the past, the club has faced setbacks due to constant interference from the state government, which has affected the team.
Recently, there were rumors that the state government had dissolved the management and board, but the team has been silent on the matter.
Notably, the Changi Boys have signed Nasiru Ismaila from rival Kano Pillars and Abdullahi Musa from Wikki Stars. Other players are expected to be officially unveiled by the club.
Fans are waiting to see if interim coach Bishir Sadauki will be given full responsibility to lead the team for the 2024/2025 season.
Katsina United participated in the Unity Cup in Abuja but were knocked out, which may not provide a good gauge of the team's readiness.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 6/10
Bendel Insurance FC
The Benin Arsenals are one of Nigeria's traditional teams, founded in 1972.
Bendel Insurance is a two-time league winner, with titles in 1973 and 1979—the last one over four decades ago.
Upon returning to the elite league after a brief stint in the lower leagues, the Benin Arsenals showed resilience, maintaining an impressive unbeaten record over two seasons, which led to their qualification for the Super 6 competition in Lagos.
However, their fortunes dipped during the 2023/2024 season as they failed to replicate their previous form and finished 9th on the table.
The Benin Arsenals have played fewer pre-season games, finishing second in the Governor Diri Pre-season competition. Transfer market activities have been minimal.
Coach Monday Odigie has a lot to prove to fans and needs to demonstrate that he is the right person for the job.
Odds of winning the league: 6/10
Odds to relegate: 6/10
Sunshine Stars FC
For Sunshine Stars, the 2024/2025 season could be defining, testing the club's grit and power.
Having made a bold move to appoint one of Nigeria's most sought-after coaches, Kennedy Boboye—who is a two-time league winner—all eyes will be on the club to perform well.
Boboye has already shown his capabilities by leading the club from the relegation zone to a 10th place finish last season.
The question is whether Boboye will have the right players to work with in the Akure Gunners' squad.
Recently, the management of the Akure-based club announced that they would retain most of the players from last season.
The club stated: “This is to notify the general public, especially fans of our dear team, that NONE of our players who have contracts with us are moving out of the team. None of them are negotiating with teams elsewhere. We are determined to keep hold of our best legs.”
Having participated in the Super 6 over the last two seasons under former coach Edith Agoye, Boboye's task is to surpass the records of his predecessor.
For reasons known only to the team, they have not been active in the transfer market. Although no new signings have been made official, six players have reportedly left the club despite denials.
Odds of winning the league: 6/10
Odds to relegate: 6/10
Niger Tornadoes
One piece of good news for Niger Tornadoes is that they are not under pressure to either win the league or qualify for continental football.
The Ikon Allah Boys may have come to expect top-10 finishes, but few will give them a chance after finishing in 14th place last season.
The club’s primary goal is a smooth tactical transition, as performances are more important than results—provided the unthinkable doesn’t happen. A relegation battle may well be on the cards.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 7/10
Abia Warriors FC
The 2024 President Federation Cup winners are not newcomers to Nigerian football.
After a bittersweet experience last season, Abia Warriors took an audacious step by appointing a league-winning coach, Imama Amapakabo, as their new head coach.
Amapakabo, a former NPFL winner and ex-Super Eagles boss, signed a two-year contract with the club. This marks Amapakabo’s second tenure with Abia Warriors, having previously managed the team during the 2020/21 season.
The club is hopeful that his return will enhance their performance in the upcoming league season. Amapakabo won the league with Rangers in 2016.
Odds of winning the league: 5/10
Odds to relegate: 7/10
El-Kanemi Warriors
The NPFL returnees will have their hands full in the Premier League this season, competing against more established teams.
Though the Desert Warriors are not newcomers to the league, the competition in the elite league is always intense.
One challenge for the Desert Warriors is the security situation in their state, which may be unfavorable to visiting teams. Boko Haram and other insurgency attacks are prominent in Maiduguri, which is their base, and this may hinder their choice of home ground. However, NPFL management has yet to make an official statement on the stadium the team will use as their home ground.
The NPFL management has scheduled the 2024/2025 season's curtain-raiser—the Super Cup/Match Day 1—for August 31, 2024. This match will feature the defending champions, Rangers International, against the defending champions of the President Federation Cup, El-Kanemi Warriors.
According to the league organizers, this will be the only encounter for the opening week.
Thus, the team, coached by Aliyu Zubair, should expect a challenging start from the very first kickoff.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 7/10
Nasarawa United FC
The Solid Miners are returning to the NPFL after spending just one season in the lower leagues.
Nasarawa United will rely on their pre-season matches to perform well in the league, having had enough time to test the new additions to the team.
The team list includes; Mohammed Manga, Barnabas Nanen Imenger, Viktor Okoro, Afeez Bankole, Bello Mohammed, Abdullahi Bello Shuaibu, Bashiru Usman, Adamu Hassan, King Osanga, Dauda Maigishiri, Ibrahim Abiola, Abdullah Mohammed, Chris Madaki, Martins Augustine Owolijah, Ghnedu Ohanachom, Paul Odeh, Esosa Igbinoba and Lawal Shehu.
Others are; Ibrahim Matthew, Chigozi Obasi, Tolulope Oluwole, Ajibola Otegbeye, Tochukwu Michael Udeh, Maduabuchi Okereke, Tayo Fabiyi, Emmanuel Ogbole, Solomon Chidi, Christopher Ikenna, Ikenna Offor, Nentaka Bangs, among others.
Coach Usman Adams will experience his first taste of the elite league, and fans can only hope for a respectable finish from the team.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 8/10
Ikorodu United FC
The Oga Boys are debutants in the league, so many fans may not expect much from them. Although the team has shown promise, the NPFL is a different challenge altogether.
The management of the Oga Boys has however, stated that the majority of players that helped them to top-flight promotion would be retained.
The Lagos-based team has been having light training sessions at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.
Ikorodu United has been active in the transfer market with the aim of making a significant impact.
The first signing, as announced, was a goalkeeper, Olughu Chinemerem, who joined the Oga Boys from Coal City.
The goalkeeper spent the 2023/24 season with Enugu-based outfit, Coal City, in Nigeria’s second division, Nigeria National League (NNL), and was in goal for the majority of the season.
Chinemerem signs a two-year deal with Ikorodu City and becomes the second goalkeeper in the club with Aina Oluwadamilare being the only retained goalkeeper from the previous season, and they will both fight for a chance to stay between the sticks at the club.
Ikorodu City and Dosu FC also reached an agreement for the transfer of Folarin Temitope to the Oga Boys.
Mercurial midfielder, Folarin Temitope, was a mainstay for Crown FC of Ogbomoso in the 2023/2024 Nigeria National League (NNl) season before returning to parent club, Dosu FC, at the end of his one-year deal with the Ogbomoso outfit.
Ikorodu City has keen interest in the midfielder who at a young age, has gathered experience playing for foreign sides, which include; Real De Bamako of Mali, Stade Olympique Londais (France) and CSM LUGOJ (Romania) before returning to the country during the COVID-19.
Folarin signs with Ikorodu City on a two-year deal and will be a key part of Bright Ozegbagbe's team and the club's first Nigeria Premier Football League season.
Part of the 2024/2025 signing also included Emmanuel Solomon, on a free transfer from Crown FC of Ogbomoso, for a one-year deal. The winger joins the Oga Boys after a successful season in the Nigeria National League (NNL) 2023/2024 season, having spent time with 1472 FC of Lagos and then the second half of the season with Crown FC of Ogbomoso.
Emmanuel found the net four times, one assist, scored two goals and made three assists for Crown FC, making a total of ten goal contributions in the NNL last season.
Other players signed are Emiloju FC striker, Alade Solomon, who joined on a one-year deal, and Rivio Ayemwenre, who joined the Oga Boys from the relegated Sporting Lagos FC.
Ikorodu United however, will miss the services of its lethal striker, Paul Aderibigbe, who completed a move to Maltese club, Mosta FC.
Aderibigbe moved to Malta from Dannaz FC, an academy based in Ikeja, Lagos, Nigeria.
The star attraction for the team however, is Ayemwenre, because of his experience in top flight football.
Under head coach Bright Ozegbagbei, the goal will be to maintain momentum in the highly competitive elite league and, potentially, contend for a continental ticket.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 7/10
Beyond Limits
For Beyond Limits, they are also debutants, but it remains to be seen if they will play in the elite league this season due to many complications.
Notwithstanding, Beyond Limits Football Academy has continued to break records, being the first academy club to gain promotion to the elite league and receiving a standing ovation for the way the club etched its name in the history books on February 26, 2024. They became the first African team to win the prestigious Viareggio Cup, a youth association football tournament held annually in the commune of Viareggio, Italy.
The Ikenne-based team defeated C.N. Brazzaville of Congo 2-0 in a thrilling final to cap off a remarkable journey through the tournament.
“The victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Beyond Limits players, coaches, and staff,” said a representative from the club.
Beyond Limits’ road to victory was not easy, as the team faced some of the best young players in the world, including defeating Carrarese U-19, Fiorentina U-19, Avellino U-19, Torino U-19, and Ojodu City FC of Nigeria on their way to the final.
At the 74th Viareggio Cup, Beyond Limits also received several awards, including "Coach of the Tournament" won by Olumide Ajibolade, "Goalkeeper of the Tournament" awarded to Favour Aputaziem, who recorded three clean sheets in seven games along with numerous saves, and "Defender of the Tournament" awarded to Victory Iboro.
However, Beyond Limits faces some hurdles, as the league regulations only allow each team to have its own management and not two teams under one management. It is an open secret that Beyond Limits FC is an offshoot and an academy club of Remo Stars, which is also in the Premier League.
Previously, rumors circulated that Beyond Limits was ready to sell its NPFL slot to the highest bidder, with relegated Heartland FC showing significant interest. However, it now appears that the deal has fallen through.
It would be premature to have Beyond Limits in the league’s pool now, but if they eventually play in the NPFL, it will be a straight battle for survival.
As an academy outfit, it remains to be seen if Beyond Limits will sign professional players to bolster the club’s experience if they play in the next season as a professional football club. For now, the club has yet to announce any new signings.
Odds of winning the league: 4/10
Odds to relegate: 7/10
