Nigeria's Super Falconets faced a heartbreaking exit from the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup after Japan secured a 2-1 victory in their Round of 16 match in Bogota on Friday. Despite a late push from Nigeria, Japan’s early control and precise finishing ensured their advancement to the quarter-finals.
The match began with Japan setting the pace, utilizing quick passes and strategic movements to challenge the Nigerian defense. Their early dominance was almost rewarded in the 13th minute when Nigerian goalkeeper Faith Omilana misjudged a cross. Fortunately, Comfort Folorunsho intervened just in time to clear the ball off the line.
Japan’s relentless pressure continued, and in the 33rd minute, Miyu Matsunaga broke the deadlock. She headed in a well-placed cross from Rihona Ujihara, giving Japan a 1-0 lead. Nigeria, known for their resilience, almost equalized just before halftime. Rofiat Imuran’s dangerous delivery tested Japan’s goalkeeper Akana Okuma, but Maya Hijikata was quick to clear the danger.
In the second half, Japan extended their lead. Maya Hijikata scored in the 66th minute, converting a cross from Chinari Sasai to make it 2-0. Despite some impressive saves from Omilana, who denied shots from Matsunaga and Suzu Amano, Nigeria struggled to keep up with Japan's high energy and technical skill.
As the game entered stoppage time, the Falconets managed to find a glimmer of hope. Olushola Shobowale scored from a cross delivered by substitute Goodness Osigwe, bringing the score to 2-1. However, this late goal was not enough for a complete comeback as Japan held their ground to secure the victory.
Japan will move on to face Spain in the quarter-finals, while Nigeria’s commendable journey in Colombia concludes with the disappointment of a narrow defeat but also with a sense of pride in their performance.
Nigeria’s promising run in the tournament ends, leaving them with the bittersweet memory of a hard-fought battle against a strong Japanese side.
