Cesc Fabregas has expressed his confidence in Ethan Nwaneri ahead of Arsenal’s highly anticipated north London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
With key midfielders set to miss the game, Nwaneri could have an opportunity to feature in his first Premier League match this season. The 17-year-old midfielder has been on the fringes of the first team and may now get his chance due to injuries and suspensions.
New signing Mike Merino is out of action after sustaining a shoulder injury before the international break, and it is expected to keep him sidelined for a significant period.
Adding to Arsenal’s midfield woes, captain Martin Ødegaard will miss the derby after suffering an ankle injury during Norway's UEFA Nations League match against Austria.
Moreover, Declan Rice will also be unavailable, serving a one-match suspension following his red card against Brighton & Hove Albion in their previous league game.
Given these absences, Nwaneri could play a crucial role in helping Arsenal navigate the midfield during the intense rivalry match. Fabregas has shown his support for the youngster, believing Nwaneri is ready for the challenge.
"I have no doubt, if Mikel Arteta includes him in the lineup, it's because he’s seen the potential for him to make a difference," Fabregas stated in an interview on the BBC's Planet Premier League Podcast. He emphasized that Arteta's faith in Nwaneri is evident, having allowed the teenager to train regularly with the first team this season.
